Promoting excellent journalism standards in Ghana and beyond

The Media Trust Ghana, is a not-for-profit, independent organization, established to provide capacity building for media managers, journalists and journalism students.

We are devoted to promoting excellent journalism standards in Ghana and beyond. Our work aims at using independent journalism to (a) foster a better informed society that can keep governments in check, improve national discourse, and deepen the practice of democracy, (b) Create awareness of the need for sustainable development, (c) throw light on underreported issues that are ignored by the dominant media, especially issues affecting the poor and vulnerable in society, who do not have the wherewithal to force their issues onto the national agenda.

In addition to our work with practicing journalists, we also work with selected students in three journalism institutions in Ghana, with the view to producing journalists who will seamlessly transition into the world of work and make an impact early in their careers.

Our Mission

To increase knowledge and capacity of media practitioners to promote sustainable development and strengthen democracy.

Our Work

Ghanaians live in a complex and often confusing world where they struggle to make sense of a myriad of issues, including the world of finance, climate change and environmental degradation, human sexuality, human rights and public health issues, to name a few. The GMT in collaboration with its partners aims to build the capacity of journalists to enable them understand these issues and more importantly, equip them with the skills to inform and educate their audiences in an engaging and compelling manner.

Our focus areas include the following:

  1. Environment and climate
  2. Finance and economy
  3. Human rights and social justice
  4. Strengthening democracy
  5. Sustainable development
  6. Media freedom
